The Wedding Room

We used to have a living room.
Now it's a wedding room.

Wedding photos everywhere.

Having a 16x20-size version of myself was a much better idea before I could see my pores from the sofa.

However, I love it. We filled up our mantel, above it and beside it with photos of us, our friends and family on our most specialest day.

(It also matches our Engagement Stairway, courtesy of photographer Kelly V).

Speaking of Ms. Talent V.... she's interested in doing a "Mess the Dress" artsy shoot with me in my dress... either under or near water for a spectacular photo to add to her catalogue. Thoughts??? There's always cleaning and preservation, right? :-)

Married!!!

With my new-found brother-in-law, sister Shelby, sister-in-law and brother Shamus.

Becoming a Mrs.

Blogger's note: This will likely be long; sometimes cheesy, maybe a little emotional. It will also be a rambling mess with no chronological order. Psh, chronological-schmronological.

***

When you're a little girl, you dream of wearing a long, poofy white dress and having your daddy walk you down the aisle with a big smile on both of your faces.

A little over two weeks ago, I got the long, poofy white dress and I had my hero -- my dad -- put his arm out for me to take. He didn't smile as much as he just stared -- at me, at Scott and at all our loved ones, with tears in his eyes. I had a silly smile on my face, staring at the man who was about to become my husband. That guy who puts the toilet paper on the holder the opposite way that I do and who, speaking of toilet paper, can clear out a nuclear power plant with his... anyway.

Let's back up.

Scott and I were together a little over three years when we got married. I knew I would marry him -- well, I certainly hoped -- on our second date.
Seriously.
I called Nicole, who became my Maid of Honor, at 2 a.m. one night after Scott and I could barely part hands (or lips!) and told her she'd be wearing a bridesmaid dress at our wedding. It came full circle when that story became part of her speech at the reception.

Scott is without a doubt my best friend (sorry ladies!). We have as much fun on our road trips as we do with a large group of friends and then when we're all by ourselves doing nothing at all. Walking down the aisle toward him was one of my favorite moments of the day. My bridesmaids were all red, blotchy and teary and the groomsmen all were smiling the sweetest smiles. Other than glances to those two groups, it was as if Scott and I were all alone in the church. He was watching me watch him watching me.

We took a moment at the start of our ceremony to think about my mom and others who weren't with us anymore and it wasn't a terribly sad, difficult moment that I envisioned it to be. My florist made a gorgeous memorial bouquet for my mom, complete with a little framed photo of her hanging from the ribbon and one of her pins in the branches that we placed on the front pew of the church. I was in such a good place that day and I am certain that my mom was with me. I felt so comforted by the pastor saying her name that all fear, anger, sadness and sorrow just disappeared. It was perfect.

I thought Scott was going to pass out entirely for about the first five minutes. All that calmness I somehow found in the aisle did not reach my hubby-to-be. He had cold, clammy hands (but no cold feet, he swears!) and was totally pale. It didn't last long, but I did find myself wondering if I should try to hold him up or just count on the best man to catch him. He didn't fall, thank goodness, although it would have added to the humor of the afternoon... I mean, with the flood watch in effect and non-stop downpour, oh and both me and Scott forgetting the marriage license at the house... and that unity candle that would.not.light. It was memorable. We got through them all just like we get through all of our hurdles big or small... with a smile, a laugh and a shrug of the shoulders.

There was this moment in the upstairs waiting room of the church, about 15 minutes before we went downstairs for our big march that everything hit me.
I had been pacing from window to window peeking at guests pulling in to the church and waving like a little kid. Then I tried sitting to calm the nerves. But I had some gas, so that wasn't too pretty. (hahaha!) So I found my way to a full-length mirror and 'had my moment,' as Nicole called it. That was another one of my favorite moments. I think a lot of my girls saw it happening and I just remembered knowing they were all there, behind me, literally and figuratively all at once, with so many loved ones piling into a building hours away from their lives just to celebrate with us. It was incredible.

Everything was perfect.
The girls all looked STUNNING in their dresses.
I was absolutely in love with my flowers.
The ceremony service was exactly what we wanted, even with the funny moments. Our pastor was such a good speaker. I know he touched a lot of people that day by incorporating things we had told him in our meetings with him during the service.
The little personal details, whether my mom's bouquet, my favorite color, photos or a song that we played at the ceremony, made the whole thing that much more perfect.

A receiving line with 130 people actually goes by a lot quicker than I had imagined. I think I was on auto-pilot, just saying "thank you so much for being  here" to most of them, but I hope they all knew that there were special messages I would have liked to write across their hearts if given the opportunity.
We had people from New England, tons from Jersey, then some from Florida, Chicago and Arizona. How lucky are we?! We had people in wheelchairs and in their 80s; an uncle who just had a heart attack; cousins I only see once a year.

We had some bubbles (which was so cute, even when I stole a container and accidentally blew bubbles into a child's face) and some photographs and then we were off -- in the rain of course -- to the reception.

The reception hall blew me away with the set-up and with how they took care of everything. I didn't even recognize the room, despite touring it at least half a dozen times and seeing it for several other occassions throughout the years. The flowers were just where they were supposed to be, the tables were set up perfectly and I just loved it all.

My dad and I danced with our eyes closed and our heads on each other's shoulder, squeezing tight, and him rocking me back and forth nearly to the point of seasickness.
Scott and his mom danced to Racal Flatts' 'My Wish,' although I don't have much to say about it because I was chatting with my uncle and Godfather about my mom. He was telling me about the telegram he got in Somalia the week I was born and how that was the happiest day of my mom's life.
I digress.
Then my HUSBAND (!) and I danced to a song he picked out, which made it super-special to me. We didn't really talk about anything, just enjoyed the moment. I didn't want to let him go!

Then it all sort of turned to a blur.

I met my half-brother for the first time since I was two years old and spent a considerable amount of time with him and his wife and my half-sister and her husband. That was so special to me. He handed me an unexpected present from someone I hadn't thought about in a long time, but that's a whole other post.

We danced, well, wait, I danced.
We enjoyed good food, a fun slideshow we slaved over for quite some time and listened to two really thoughtful speeches from Nicole and Bill. There was no Chewbacca call from Bill, but I guess we'll let it slide.

I can't think of anything I would have wanted differently. Well, maybe more time. Or shoes that were comfortable even 10 hours into wearing them. And probably another glass of wine.

But really, it was just perfect.

Scott and I spent our wedding night here, which, sad to say, wasn't as exciting as we thought it would be, although, really, what place would be when you arrive at 1 a.m. and have to check out at 10 a.m.???

And, because I'm a married woman now, we can officially talk about this on the blog.
Yes, yes I did have married/wedding night sex.
Muhahaha.

Smiley face, smiley face, smiley face.

Wedding teaser

My long, massive, boring post about my wedding day and our honeymoon is in the works.

For now...
Me with my two guys on my happiest day ever.

And just one more bridesmaid's thoughts to give me more time before my next post

My dear friend Kacey had some great things to say about her experience on my wedding weekend.

And some great photos, too!

Thanks, 'boose!

Belated post from Jeans

This is Wendy, on behalf of Jeannine, on behalf of me. Here's a post from several days ago that Jeans sent to me via e-mail after some technological issues. I'll be back to posting in the next day or so, after unpacking, laundry, organizing, thank-you cards, going back to work and much, much more...

***

hey everybody, this is jeannine, another one of wendy's bridesmaids reporting in ;)

the wedding was spectacular - the flowers were beautiful, the church and reception hall were lovely, the families and friends were great, scott is the shit...and the bride was breath-taking (i'm sorry, it is ok to say "shit" in wendy's blog?  i hope so.)   wendy's dress was so graceful and her hair was stunning, but the glow she was radiating was the most gratifying, and wonderful thing i've ever seen.  lol, and THAT'S why wendy put a mini thing of tissues in my gift bag.  eesh.

on to the funny stuff!  wendy knows me a little too well and seated me and my boyfriend, along with kacey, some high school friends (who it was GREAT to see) and a few others within arms reach of both the bar and the dance floor.  unfortunately, there are pictures on facebook to prove it.

...and while i'm sure that wendy and scott are having a really great, well-deserved time on their honeymoon, but i miss her and i'm ready for her to come home.

:)

The countdown has reached HOURS.

Guess what?
We're getting married!!!... TOMORROW.

Whoa.
When did that happen? When did the entire year fly by? When did the summer become nonexistent? When did my countdown reach HOURS?!

I'm in a weird state of sort of numb excitement. No nerves yet, although I'm feeling my first bit of butterflies this morning. I just can't wait to see everyone and to finally wear my dress for more than 20 minutes and to see my gorgeous bridesmaids in THEIR dresses.

And did I mention my handsome daddy? Or my AMAZING soulmate of a groom?

I have some downtime right now. Scott just took my Maid of Honor Nicole (who arrived late last night) to get her dress steamed at the dress shop and to pick up his tux and my dad's tux. I need to shower and then am just waiting for my girls to start showing up. I have about an hour to myself and like I said, all I've got is that numb sort of excitement.

I can't believe it's really here.
While my relationship with Scott isn't really changing, I just know that my life will forever be changed after the I do's tomorrow.

For now, friends, family and probably some liquor. :-)

Thanks to everyone for following along on this journey and for the great advice last entry (thanks, Jessica!).

I don't know when my next blog will be -- I'm hoping some of my bridesmaids will take up my mission to upload a few posts, but I know how hectic their schedules are, so, for now... I'll write again when I'm a married woman (who has just enjoyed a terrific honeymoon!!!)

Love rocks!!!!!!!!

Calling all former brides...

Well, non-brides can offer advice, too, and are encouraged to, in fact!

I've been asking almost everyone I meet, whether it's at a work interview, in the grocery store or talking with our florist or pastor...

What is your best piece of advice for the wedding day?
What is your best piece of advice for marriage?
Hey, how about the honeymoon???

I've gotten some great tips so far (take a minute ... or two or three... to sit back and just take in your reception and all the loved ones having a good time; sneaking in a kiss before the reception; making sure to have some beverages [hehehe] and so many more). I can't wait for more thoughts.

What about for those of you who have been to/in weddings? What means the most to you? What do you remember most?

I'm all ears...
... and all countdowns! :-)

Thanks!

Talkin' 'bout a Sunday drive on a Friday

I have just gotten so ridiculously awful at blogging lately. Please forgive me. It's the Wedding Mind Syndrome thingy.

Anyway... on Sunday... sigh, FIVE days ago, Scott and I went for an impromptu drive.

In the first couple years of our relationship, we used to frequently go for rides around the area, especially as I was still getting acquainted with 'the country.' I learned towns and back roads and we got to have some really intimate conversations about ourselves and our future along these streets and highways.

An essential part of our trips was, like in most places and times in my life, my camera. I captured endless self-portraits of the two of us -- me grinning like a fool and Scott half-smiling, half-driving (thank goodness!).

It's been a long time since our last little road trip, but on Sunday, we just did it. Forgot about the to-do list and the phone calls, e-mails and errands. We just got in my man's manly truck and off we went.

Three-plus hours and three states later and it was just.like.old.times.

Here's a peek at our journey, at least before my camera battery died somewhere in West Virginia and at between 50 and 70 mph.  Starting at our house (!), including Maryland and West Virginia scenery and the always-exciting mini-Tabasco bottle at a convenience store along the way.

Single-digit countdown!

There are 9 (ish) days until I get married.

Stop. Pause. Reflect.
Giggle, squint eyes at wedding countdown reminder, giggle, scream.

Yep.

I don't even know what else to say. I'm getting married, to my best friend, NEXT WEEK. The dress is being altered, the welcome bags are lined up in the guest room and the place cards are in a neat pile in alphabetical order. The first song is picked out, the wedding night hotel room is reserved and yes, the butterflies are most definitely starting to build.

I've been sort of numb for weeks, then excited for weeks, in this crazy up-and-down cycle that really seemed to depend on how busy I was at the moment.

I'm really beyond ready to just get to THE day and be a Mrs. already, but a small part of me is sad to say goodbye to the words 'engaged' and 'fiancee' already. Those words that I'll never have a part of my personal life again. Cheesy, yes, but still an important time that I hope I always appreciate and cherish.

I've gotten closer to friends and family, especially my AMAZING bridesmaids who have each supported me in different ways these past nine months, whether through humor, advice, bridal magazine subscriptions or my lovely bridal showers.

I'll be celebrating with my half-sister and half-brother on Sept. 26 -- two people with my blood and my (not for much longer!) last name. I may not have taken initiative at getting them back in my life again without me and Scott gettin' hitched.

I've also learned to accept and love my mother, her demons and even her passing these past few months. The dress shopping was hard and I know the empty seat at the church will be even harder, but I really feel as though she's with me now.

And then there's Scott.
I'm such an emotional mystery right now that I find myself tearing up just by typing his name. It's so silly. I love and appreciate him so much right now. I have become a better person, a better me, throughout our 3+ years together, but more so during these months of having a new home, adopting an abused dog, handling chores and bills, getting engaged and planning for our wedding. It takes more to get me unreasonably angry and I'm better, er, getting better at keeping my temper in check.

He is my rock.
He is my best friend.
I truly believe he is my soulmate.

And in a few days, he will be my husband.

Two easy steps to blushing (and beautiful) bride

Step One.
Find an amazing friend and wonderful person who also happens to do a fabulous job with make-up, even if she is completely honest about your wrinkles, acne, translucent skin and possible mustache.

Step Two.
Find a hairstylist who constantly raves about your "beautiful hair."
Implore said stylist to make sense of your makes-no-sense requests for wedding day hairdos.

Combine them. Stir slightly, but only if enough hairspray to attract every bee in central Pennsylvania has been used. Also, fake eyelashes and 29 bobby pins are a plus.

And voila, you get this.
Oh, and this...

Holy September, Batman!!!

I feel like I need a bunch of 60's-era thought bubbles with words like "Ka-pow!" and "Sha-zam!" to describe the CRAZY feelings I felt when turning my calendars (I have six in my office alone) to the month of September (!). I mean, wait, where did this year go???

And did I mention I'm getting married in like 24 days???

::insert action-packed thought bubble here::

I keep telling myself that I am relatively stress-free. I hope my close friends and especially my fiance would agree.

I keep hoping that my gigantic bruises on my legs stop getting darker and begin to disappear. St. Lucia just doesn't want to see that.

I gleefully postponed getting my registration re-newed (it's not due until October, no worries) because I'M GOING TO HAVE A NEW LAST NAME BEFORE THEN.

I had my make-up trial run the other day by the fabulous Ruby (one of our groomsman's girlfriends and one of my newest friends.) She did a great job (although it took me a while to realize the make-up has to be more than my usual powder and mascara, hehehe) and I love how honest she is about my translucent skin, bad eyebrows and possible mustache. Sigh, whatever, I can take it.

I go for my hair trial run tomorrow. I can't wait! That's going to make it very, very real (again).

The best little thought bubble of recent days?
I'm falling more and more in love with Scott. I can't wait until he's my husband. :-)

*** Yesterday, my first major migraine in YEARS decided to drop in and visit. I was basically bedridden in a dark, quiet place last night and this morning but am doing better today... although I still feel it.
I used to get migraines ALL the time, especially in my college years. They usually crept in slowly, which made this sudden appearance strange to me. My 'best' ones last at least a few days. My worst one lasted three weeks. Oy!
Scott attempted to 'kill' the squeaky in Izzie's brand new dog toy ( a football for the new sports season of course) this morning after I almost threw the dog and her toy out our second-story window as my head tried to explode.

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

Happy September. :-)

ONE month...

... 'til our wedding!
Can you believe how quickly this engagement has gone by? I definitely am amazed at how the time has sped on by.

We're so excited!
Things are falling into place and I'm still (reasonably and mostly) calm and stress-free!

We meet with our pastor tonight to discuss ceremony plans and take a quiz or two on our relationship -- oy!

Here's to love!!! :-)

Licensed to love, yo.

Scott and I finally have our marriage license. Guess there's no going back now!

Although, if the process we went through to get our marriage license is any indication of our lives together for the next 60 or 70 years, it ought to be interesting.

First, there's the matter of the prothonotary's hours. They close at 4 p.m. at the two closest courthouses. Scott usually doesn't get in the house til around then. And there's that stink level he brings home, so we usually encourage showers before he leaves the homestead again.

Well, one day last week, Scott had an early day home from work. So we put everything on hold, and ran to the car. Only neither one of us could find our Social Security cards. See, a while back, Scott got a lecture from someone saying it's dangerous/bad/dumb to keep those cards in your wallet. So he took mine and his and put them in a "safe place." Said safe place is so safe that we have yet to find it again.

So nothing got accomplished last week.

We filed our applications and then today, another short day for Scott, and we run to the SSA office 40 minutes away. We tell the people there about our story of not having our cards and needing a marriage license and a lovely lady there gave us a print-out that basically would substitute for the cards in the event we didn't want to wait the two weeks til they arrived at our house. Great, we say! There's 40 minutes before the closest courthouse closes. Let's do it!

We run in, excited and glowing with pre-marital anticipation. The whole process is rather easy, although the lack of knowledge on my biological parents proved for a few awkward moments.

We raised our right hands, took an oath that all the information was accurate and ran away with a license.

And we were never even asked for our social security cards.
Sigh.

Oh well, at least we're ready for the next step!!!

*My step-mother, sister, niece and nephew arrive tomorrow. I'm sure this will be an interesting couple of days if nothing else.
Goals: NOT to kill my stepmother. NOT to tell my sister she's a horrific parent. Smile and enjoy it. With beer in hand.

I'm baaaaaaack!

I realize that it seems to all my faithful readers (I love both of you, haha) that I have fallen off the face of the earth.

Yes and no.

I went to Jersey and back, had a bachelorette weekend of shenanigans (Hunk-o-Mania in the ghetto anyone?), my first of two bridal showers (second one is this weekend!) and on top of that am making the first of many, many, MANY last-minute wedding plans (dress fittings, ceremony planning and hair-dos, oh my!) while caught in the midst of my coverage area's scandals, increased taxes and a fatal car crash.

Sigh.
In between the 12-hour work days and 45 thank-you cards, I am also trying to maintain a healthy, loving relationship with my soulmate.

And keep my sanity.

And fight off the cold/sickness that has given me a Man Voice for the past two days. I don't know how long until I wave my white flag at the NyQuil bottle. I just hope I make it through Saturday.

Oh, and did I mention my stepmother, sister, 9-year-old niece and 4-year-old nephew are visiting next week?

At the core of it all, however, I am so happy. I am blissfully content with all of the opportunities I have, the good health I've GIVEN MYSELF and the dozens of loved ones who make me feel like a princess.

I missed my blogging and promise to be back regularly very, very soon (with scandalous photos, perhaps?!)

For now, enjoy me and 4 out of 5 of my bridesmaids in Wildwood, NJ, and then us with my niece/junior bridesmaid at the shower. Oh, and a beach shot of me and my flat boobs with my favorite hat of all time in one of my most relaxed moments EVER.

Just about time to celebrate being a bachelorette -- Part Two

OK, now for the fun stuff.
What? I couldn't be all sappy and then completely scandalous all in one blog post. That's so unethical. :-)

I'm so excited for this weekend!
I leave tonight with Debbie, my future mother-in-law. The two of us will meet Nicole, my maid-of-honor and friend from my Argentina study abroad program, at my dad and Janet's house.
Then, Friday, me and Nicole... and I don't know if anyone else... will drive ... to our destination. (I told you, a LOT of secrets and surprises in this.) We will be joined by friends and bridesmaids Jeannine, Kacey and Allison... and I don't know who else, if anyone. (SO many secrets!)

(Bridesmaid Julie can't make the trip on account of her little baby but she might have something up her sleeves locally for next month.)

I can ONLY imagine what will happen Friday and Saturday. I'm sure my photos next week will speak for themselves.

Then on Sunday, I have my bridal shower. The only thing I know about that is that it's at Dad and Janet's. They have a great backyard/deck area that should be really cozy.

And then I come back home on Monday.

I make it sound really simple and not so exciting, but in fact, I know it will likely be one of the best times of my life. My girls have never all been in the same room together, so that will be the first major highlight for me.

They each bring something to the table -- laughter, compassion, being fun-loving -- and they've all been amazing friends throughout different periods of my life.

Allison, now living in Jacksonville, FL., is my oldest friend of the bunch -- we went to elementary school together and were in the same Brownies troop.

I met Jeannine in high school and, even after a brief interruption in our friendship during college, we've completely reconnected and talk almost every day. She's in grad school in Philly.

Kacey is my college friend who saw me during some of my darkest times, drunkest times and funniest times. She's a teacher just outside of Philadelphia.

Julie is the local friend who keeps me sane and offers the best advice for what I'm going through and what's to come.

And Nicole, in Massachusetts, is my 'gemela,' my twin who changed my life in a mere eight or nine times that I've ever EVER seen her.

I love them all.

Even if they make me wear penis necklaces.
(But I hope they don't! hahaha)

Just about time to celebrate being a bachelorette -- Part One

I leave tonight for what I'm sure will be a fun-filled bachelorette par-tay weekend in New Jersey.

There will be a group of my closest friends, sun (hopefully), laughter, and more than my fair share of feather boas, as well as a bridal shower one day.

My bridesmaids have been FANTASTIC in their planning and secret-keeping and I am really looking forward to leaving tonight. I'm packed with enough clothes to last me two weeks or more and I'm so happy!

BUT.
I just went through what is likely going to be the hardest part of this weekend. I had to say goodbye to Scott.

I'll more than likely leave the house before he gets home from work tonight and he's not one to call a million times when I'm away, so we probably won't be having any deep convos until Monday night when I return.

And that's fine. My ultra-feminist side screams out amid the smoke from my burning bra and says I don't need a man to make me happy, damnit.

And I don't.
But Scott just honestly and naturally makes me so happy with so little ease. He's my other half for sure, and I doubt I'd even need a bachelorette party, or a wedding for that matter, if he didn't complete me. (Oh, you Jerry Maguire fans just high-fived one another thinking about that scene.)

Plus, my usually non-sappy fiance got way too deep just before we went to sleep last night, telling me to have a blast but that he'll miss me a lot.

Aww.
He likes me, he really likes me!!!

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go. I'm standing here outside your door. I hate to wake you up to say goodbye. But the dawn is breakin'...

LESS THAN 2 months...

... until I walk down the aisle in a pretty white dress toward a hunky guy I might just have a crush on... to say the least.

I honestly can't even fathom the fact that our wedding is LESS than two months away! CRAZY.

I can't wait, though. It's so close now, I just want to enjoy all of this.

I'm going to be a Mrs.!

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

I can't rule out strippers.

So my bridesmaids are planning something super, sneaky and super-sneaky for my bachelorette party shenanigans. I don't know what's in store, only that the excitement takes place July 31-Aug. 3. (I get my own weekend -- how cool is that???)

Here's a snippet of an e-mail convo with Jeannine today:

J: ...I mean, if I can invite her to Wendy's bachelorette carnival of fun, that is...
W: I love that you call it the carnival of fun. I'm also slightly frightened. Should I bring bail money???
J: Hell no, we're just gonna flash the po-po. What do you think this is, amateur hour or something?

Although most bachelorette parties become one of those "had-so-much-fun-I-don't-remember-it" occasions, I think this might be an exception. I have a feeling I won't be able to forget this.

WHOA.

So, apparently, according to my wedding countdown thingys that I keep forgetting about, we're getting married in 100 days.

ONE-HUNDRED.

As in, tomorrow we'll be down to two-digit countdowns.

WHOA.

I have nothing else to say. Other than where did December, January, February, March, April and May go???

WHOA.
